• 4 June 1974 : Bishop Walter F. Sullivan is appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Richmond.
• 28 May 1974: Churches in Southwest Virginia are transferred from the Diocese of Wheeling to the Diocese of Richmond.
• 8 September 1974 : Rev. John Fahey, Pastor of St. Anne in Bristol, celebrates the first mass in Abingdon at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
• 10 December 1974 : The Catholic community in Abingdon is granted mission status by Bishop Walter F. Sullivan, and becomes a mission church of St. John the Evangelist in Marion. Rev. Daniel Bain (1) is appointed Pastor.
• April 1975 : The church community takes the name Christ the King. Sunday Mass is moved to St. John Lutheran Church to accomodate increased attendance.
• 7 September 1982 : Construction begins on new church at current location.
• 28 February 1983 : Rev. Carl DeSouza is appointed Administrator.
• 7 May 1983 : Dedication of New Church at current location.
• 31 May 1983 : Rev. Carl DeSouza (2) is appointed Pastor.
• 29 May 1985 : Rev. Leo Cervantes (3) is appointed Pastor.
• 26 August 1988 : Rev. Kenneth Stofft is appointed Administrator.
• 30 May 1989 : Rev. Robert Krenik (4) is appointed Pastor.
• 12 June 1994 : Bishop Walter F. Sullivan dedicates enlarged worship space, new fellowship hall (named in honor of Charles Seger), kitchen, and classrooms.
• 1 September 2003 : Rev. Paul Maier (5) is appointed Pastor.
• 2007 : Rev. Mr. Richard Cronican is appointed permanent Deacon.
• 1 July 2012 : Rev. Francis Xavier Musolooza (6) is appointed Pastor.
• 1 August 2022 : Rev. Rolo B. Castillo (7) is appointed Pastor.
• 1 July 2023 : Rev. Chris Masla is appointed Priest Administrator.
• 7 August 2024:  Rev. Chris Masla is appointed Pastor of Christ the King and Saint John the Evangelist.

Welcome to Christ the King Parish in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia! We are a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Richmond. My name is Fr. Chris Masla (I go by Fr. Chris), the pastor of Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon as well as St. John the Evangelist in Marion. If you're new to the area I sincerely hope you find a spiritual home here.
